Overview

The College of Foreign Languages at Qufu Normal University was founded in 1960.  It is organized into three departments: English, French, and Russian. The college confers bachelors, master’s, and doctoral degrees.

     Starting in 1993, a number of additional degrees were added, including Master’s degree in Applied Linguistics (1993), Bachelor’s degree in English Language Teaching (2002), Master’s degree in English (2003), Master’s degrees in Russian, Japanese, and Asian-African Languages (2009).  The post graduate programs continued to expand after 2009 and advanced to the top tier of graduate programs in the country.  In 2010 it began to offer Master’s degrees in foreign languages and in translation.  Since 2013 it has also collaborated with the doctoral program of Chinese Department and developed a graduate program in Linguistics and Comparative Literature.    

Currently, there are 89 full-time faculty, including 10 professors, 22 Associate Professors, 5 Doctoral Thesis Advisors, 25 Master’s Thesis Advisors. With two Yangtze (Changjiang) Scholars, five Ministry of Education New Century Distinguished Scholars, and many nationally and provincially award-winning teachers, the college is known for its strong faculty team and capacity in study and practice. The faculty and students work together to understand education. This collaborative, dynamic environment helps students in both both academic and personal growth.

The College of Foreign Languages offers top notch pre- and post-service teacher education.  There are seven undergraduate majors: English, Business English, French, Japanese, Korean, Russian, and Translation.  Graduate programs in Foreign Languages and Literature, Translation and Interpreting, Education, Curriculum and Instruction in English Language Teaching are offered.

It has established a premier platform for developing academic programs, and has the capacity for advanced research. Our research is funded by agencies on both national and provincial levels. We have 21 projects sponsored by the National Social Science Funds, three programs under the National Education Planning, and 22 projects under the Humanities and Social Sciences Department of the Ministry of Education. On the provincial level, the College received 15 recognitions for its research, and published nearly 200 papers in peer-reviewed journals in addition to more than 30 monographs.  

Internationally, the College has established exchange programs and partnerships with academic institutions with various countries including the U.S., France, and Russia.  Many of the recent graduates have pursued advanced study in top tier academic institutions in China and overseas.

English Department

The Department houses several key provincial level research programs such as Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, and is home to 2 such research centers as Foreign Languages and Translation Research Center, and Sino-Western Languages and Culture Research Center, which brings faculty, students and researchers together to further understand related issues facing education today.

In English department, we offer bachelors, master’s and doctoral programs.

Bachelors: English, business english, translation

Master’s Program: Premier program for Foreign Languages and Literature, Translation and Interpreting, Education, Curriculum and Instruction in English Language Teaching.

Doctoral Program: Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, Comparative and World Literature, Education

Career and Placement: Graduates of the English Department have been placed in the fields of education, business, research, culture, international affairs, travel, publishing, etc.

Russian Department

The Department houses several key provincial level research programs such as Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, and is home to 2 such research centers as Foreign Languages and Translation Research Center, and Sino-Western Languages and Culture Research Center, which brings faculty, students and researchers together to further understand related issues facing education today.

In Russian department, we offer bachelors, master’s and doctoral programs.

Master’s Program:  Foreign Languages and Literature, Translation, Linguistics, Comparison of languages and culturesResearch on culture and region

Career and Placement: Graduates of the Russian Department have been placed in the fields of education, business, research, culture, international affairs, travel, publishing, etc.

French Department
