School Profile

The School of Translation studies of QFNU was founded in 1985. It has four undergraduate majors, namely, translation, business English, Japanese and Korean, a first-level master degree program in foreign language and literature (including English language and literature, Japanese language and literature, and Asian-African language and literature) and a master degree program in translation (including English interpretation, English translation, Japanese translation, and Korean translation). Among them, translation and business English are listed as the high-level application-oriented construction majors (groups) in Shandong Province, and translation majors are listed as the first-class undergraduate majors in Shandong Province. In 2021, Japanese majors began to recruit normal students. After more than 30 years, the School of Translation Studies has adhered to QFNU motto of "never tire of learning and never tire of teaching", and has inspired generations of teachers and students to work hard.

History and achievements

In 1985, the former Rizhao Branch of QFNU was established as a foreign language specialty.

In 2006, it was renamed the Department of Applied English.

In 2007, it was renamed the School of Translation Studies, and the scale of the school gradually expanded, covering English, Japanese and Korean.

Since 2008, a master degree program in English language and literature has been established.

In 2010, it was approved to be the authorized unit for the master degree in translation, and the enrollment specialty gradually expanded from English translation to English interpretation, Japanese translation, Korean translation and other majors.

In 2011, the foreign language discipline was approved as a key discipline with the characteristics of the "12th Five-Year Plan" in Shandong Province, and the basic platform of the discipline was significantly improved. In the same year, it was approved as a first-level master degree program in foreign languages and literature. The degree and postgraduate education system have been gradually improved. The master training covered three languages (English language and literature, Japanese language and literature, Asian and African language and literature).

In 2017, translation majors and business English majors were included in the construction of high-level application-oriented majors (groups) in Shandong Province.

In 2019, the translation specialty was approved as a provincial first-class undergraduate specialty construction site.

In 2021, the Japanese major was approved to be adjusted as a normal class.

In 2021, the foreign language discipline entered the top 30% of China's best disciplines in soft science, ranking first in Shandong provincial universities.

Teachers

At present, the school has a team of teachers with reasonable age structure, educational background structure and academic relationship structure, rich teaching experience and strong scientific research ability. There are 60 professional teachers, including 5 professors, 20 associate professors, 4 doctoral supervisors, 31 master supervisors, and more than 30 foreign teachers from the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, Japan, and South Korea. There are also more than 30 part-time professors from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Beijing Foreign Studies University, Shanghai Foreign Studies University, Peking University, Tsinghua University, etc.

With full spirit and enthusiasm, all the staff of the school constantly strengthen the basic work of teaching, scientific research and management, and strive to build the school into a first-class foreign language research base and high-quality foreign language talent training base in China. Adopting the "foreign language+specialty" compound talent training mode and the "classroom+practical training+practice trinity" teaching mode, the school is committed to cultivating high-quality, compound application and innovative international professional foreign language talents, and have built a number of college students' practice and training bases with prominent professional advantages, distinctive characteristics and complete supporting facilities. In recent years, in order to meet the requirements of epidemic prevention and control, the School of Translation Studies has actively implemented the new mode of online practice activities, combining professional quality with social practice, truly making the practice activities intelligent, personalized and interactive, and improving the students' language use ability.

The school has vigorously developed undergraduate education and postgraduate education in English, Korean and Japanese, and has delivered more than 15600 professional foreign language talents to society. The passing rate of professional examinations such as CET-8, Korean TOPIK, Japanese JLPT and so on is far higher than the national average. In the past five years, the graduate examination rate of the school has remained above 30%. It has won more than 30 national awards and more than 300 provincial awards in professional competitions such as the National Foreign Language Translation Competition, Speech Contest, Debate Contest, Reading Contest and Interpretation Contest.

Attach importance to international training and education

The School of Translation Studies pays attention to the internationalization of talent training, adheres to the continuous exploration and innovation of talent training mode, and consolidates and expands international communication channels. The school will try its best to provide every undergraduate and graduate student with overseas exchange opportunities and comprehensively improve the internationalization level of undergraduate and graduate students. It has established a variety of international exchange and joint training relationships with more than 20 universities in the United States, the Czech Republic, Japan, South Korea, Ireland and other countries, and carried out cooperation and exchange activities such as overseas study visits, exchange of study abroad, double undergraduate degrees, summer paid internships, summer camps, etc. Each year, it recommends several graduates to study in well-known foreign universities.
