Qufu Normal University Library was established in 1955. Previously known as Qufu Teacher’s College Library, it was changed to its current name in 1985. After more than 60 years of development, it has now become one of “the national key units for Preservation and Conservation of Ancient Books”, a university library with high reputation and influence in China. Its overall quality of library management and comprehensive strength have reached an advanced level within Shandong Province.

 

◆Organizational Structure and Management

    The Library adopts the director accountability system under the leadership of the University President. The University has a Library Work Committee, and the Library has organizations such as the Party and Administration Joint Committee, the Literature Resources Construction Committee, and the Automation Construction Committee. The Library has several departments, including the Main Office, the Intelligence Analysis and Service Department, the Literature Resources Construction Department, the System and Technology Department, the Multimedia Service Department, the Information Consultation Department, the Disciplinary Service Department, the Circulation Department, the Reading Department, the Special Collection Department, etc.

 

◆Basic Facility

The Library consists of two campus libraries: Qufu Campus Library and Rizhao Campus Library, with 42,888 square meters of gross floor space and 4,800 seats. The Library has now been in full network coverage and under computerized management. A network-based platform for co-construction and sharing of the resources has been built between the two campus libraries and between the Library and reference rooms at individual schools and departments.

◆Literature Resources Construction

By the end of 2017, the Library’s collection numbered more than 700,000 kinds of paper books and periodicals, and 4.33 million volumes. Among them, more than 7,000 types are newspapers and periodicals, and more than 100,000 volumes are ancient books. The Library has more than 110 large-scale database platforms, 2.31 million full-text electronic books, and 36,000 electronic journals. In addition, it had a large number of CD documents and multimedia documents. It is one of the most important information collection and service centers in Shandong Province.

 

◆ Major services and innovations

We formed teams for subject services and by using data platforms such as Incites, ESI, SCOPUS, CSSCI, and CNKI, we submit academic development analysis reports, academic international competitiveness evaluation reports, talent assessment reports, and academic development trends to the University, as basis for decision-making and supporting databases.

We integrated related services in CALIS (China Academic Library & Information System) into the entire service system to provide various services, including information consultation, discipline guidance, document delivery, paper submission, reader training, etc. We also use the “Academic Achieve Retrieval System” to provide readers with literature and citation searching, similarity testing, and identification services.

We built a modern library service system through advanced facilities and equipments like computers, mass storage devices, document management systems, e-Book borrowing machines, mini-classroom learning devices, etc. To meet diversified and personalized needs of readers, we added WiFi networks, digital experience zones, seminar rooms, multimedia rooms, and information sharing spaces. Through the digital library, the mobile library, and such service platforms as WeChat, Weibo, and QQ, digitalized, networked, and virtualized services are accessible to readers.

By launching serial activities including the “Service Promotion Month Campaign, the “Quality Service Month Campaign, the “Reading Promotion, the “Orientation Week” , and the “Graduation Season, we have effectively supported both cultural and academic developments of our University, created a strong atmosphere of culture and service, and provided a better environment for students’ learning, growing and flourishing, embodying the Library’s “user-oriented service first” concept.

◆ Development goals and positioning

Taking the opportunity of building a new high-standard and modernized library, we are creating a first-class large information service platform. Providing high-quality academic novelty searching, strengthening the construction of a new generation of mobile libraries, and providing knowledge services based on big data and new institutional repository, the Library is striving to strategically transform into a high-level university library, bringing its management quality, comprehensive strength and social influence to a new level that counts as first-class in Shandong Province, leading in some specifilized fields, and advanced in the country.
